I have struggled with the loss

My grandmother passed away from an unexpected brain tumour late last year, and since then my family and I have struggled with the loss. My father has been acting differently in the sense that he is less jubilant in day to day life and has become less of a joker within the family, it’s upsetting to see. A couple of months ago he decided to throw himself into improving his fitness and since then has been walking more often, going to football sessions, and taking up yoga. He pitched to me the idea of walking up the highest mountain in Wales, Mount Snowdon. At first, I was sceptical as I am not the fittest person around, but once he told me a story that one of my grandmother’s ambitions was to reach the peak before she died I was all for it and ready for the challenge. Unfortunately, my grandmother never got the opportunity to reach the summit, but our aim is to reach it in her memory. In the last few weeks we have been completing a number of walks, including the smallest mountain in Wales (Pen Y Fan). It’s great to see the change in my father and I hope this is the point where he starts to become his old self, onwards and upwards as I always say!

We are raising money for a charity project set up by the Presbyterian Church that helps people in the Philippines rebuild their lives after the devastating typhoon that ripped through the South-East Asia in late 2013. During the typhoon, wind speeds reached up 195 mph and left 6,300 people dead in the Philippines alone. Bodies were still being found months after and many lives were ruined because of it. As a former Elder and Sunday School teacher at Soar Methodist Chapel, Pontardawe, this is something my grandmother would have been very passionate about as her life was centred around helping and improving the lives of others.
